What is ART like in 5th grade?
By 5th grade students should feel at home in the ART room! They are challenges with a series of experiences that push them to think outside of the box. Many of the art projects will invite students to explore their own identity. Students will create a collaborative legacy project with clay at the end of the year. This artwork will be put on display in the school for years to come and will help prepare them for the awesome art programming at Grove Junior High led by Mrs. Wood. Please consider enrolling your child in the ARTS program there. Research shows that the arts exercise the brain in unique ways to help promote creative problem solving, confidence, and self awareness!
5th graders are invited to join one of the three art clubs offered on Thursdays during lunch.

Portrait Possibilities
Here are some great resources to help you express yourself when creating your portrait. Check them out and find some inspiration.
FINGER PRINT PAINTING: Draw your portrait with pencil and gently paint the contour lines using your own finger prints (I recommend using your pinky finger for small lines and making some lines larger using your pointer finger).
VALUE PAINTING: Mix black and white tempera paint to create a variety of values and paint your portrait. Add words to the background the help express your values.
MULTIMEDIA COLLAGE: Ask for several copies of your photography portrait and used colored pencils, paper, and paint on top to create a unique portrait.
|
WIRE PORTRAIT: Use wire to create a self portrait. Cut, twist, and wind the wire to connect shaped together and display on a high contrast backdrop. Add fabric or other colorful items to complete your project.
TEXT PORTRAIT: Use words from your writing (for example from the memoir you wrote at the beginning of the year with your teacher). Lightly sketch your portrait with pencil and then use black pen to carefully cover the lines with words. You can change the shape and size of the letters to express the importance of some of the words and or different parts of the image.
COLOR PAPER MOSAIC: use a variety of cut colored paper shapes and carefully glue them in place using your photography portrait and tracing paper as a guide.

Today students experimented with creating tableaus: a frozen dramatic moment. Just wait...their final expressive family story projects are coming!
Where are the hole punchers?
The first day of art students completed a scavenger hunt of the room, proving they know where materials can be found and how to navigate the room. Now we are all ready to start making art!
Clay Feathers are Back from GroveFifth grade will be creating a legacy project that will be on display this fall titled "Soaring Feathers". Each student created a feather. The first step involved throwing their clay on the table to produce a slab. Next they added texture using clay tools and their smooth finger tips. Holes were added before firing them in the kiln. A special shout out to MRS. WOOD at Grove who kindly fired all of our feathers in her kiln.
When they returned from the kiln student finished the feathers using oil pastel and white acrylic paint. This will be hung in one of the LRC "windows" for all to enjoy and appreciate for years to come. Thanks for your hard work 5th grade. Remember your clay skills when you work with Mrs. Wood on future clay projects! We will miss you at Clearmont. |
Found Object Portraits
What do you believe? What is important to you? Students grappled with the question and created self portraits that communicate their ideas.
Paper Sculpture
Students have constructed their sculptures in a variety of exciting ways. Next students will document an installation location for their artwork and provide and explanation of their choices. This documentation can be completed in 3 ways: Using Thing Link, Sketch Kit, or pen and paper. Students present their projects to one another in a variety of group settings including whole class and small group.

Paper Sculpture Investigations
5th Grade students began exploring different paper sculpture techniques and invented some techniques of their own. Some chose to document their ideas using their tablets to use as reference when they begin their final sculpture creation.
