What's ART like in 2nd grade?
Welcome to a 2nd grade art class. Students enter the room and sit to begin a discussion after looking at a work of art. A question is given to students. They look, turn to a partner and talk about their ideas. Students are then introduced to a creative challenge of the day. After watching a demonstration all artists go to their home-base seat to get set up for creation. The art they create all looks slightly different based on their skill and interest. It is rare that we all create the same work of art in class because all artists have different talents and creative ideas. The art that students create is authentically their own.

Printmaking and CritiqueStudents have begun a printmaking unit that encourages asking for feedback from one another. After receiving feedback they will refine their print plates to create new and improved prints. Here is the instructional video that helps them learn the process of making prints out of styrofoam.

Intro to Watercolor and Taking Chances
Creature Creation
Students are creating their own creatures using a variety of techniques including: painted paper collage, symmetrical prints, and drawing. These creatures will be asking their student creators to be architects and design a home for them to keep them safe and cozy. Stay tuned to see the student architects in action!
Animal Architecture
We have started a new unit called Animal Architecture. Students will be developing their understanding of architecture and creating creatures complete with their own uniquely designed homes that meet their creature needs. The first day of the unit was spend talking about architecture and exploring design in teams of three using only pipe cleaners and clay.
It's not a Tube
After experiencing a drama activity involving a paper towel roll (that transformed into many different objects) students decided how they would transform their tube. The results were wide ranging. Students constructed castles, people, french fries and ice cream cones to name a few.
Stars and Stripes for the Troops
Today during our 25 minute special's rotation students created lots and lots of stars and stripes! We began class with a social and emotional discussion about life in the military and how the arts can help show our appreciation for them. These are now packaged and ready for delivery.
Magical Poof
Can art be magical? Art has the power to transform everyday objects. Students have begun exploring the possibilities of many different art materials. After experimenting they each created a "magical poof". Check out some of their results below.
Partner Challenge
Collaboration is a priority in the art room. This year students started the year in ART with a partner challenge. After working as a team to explore materials students were challenged to work in groups of 2. One student created a work of art by arranging objects and then instructed their partner how to create the same work of art. Students will continue to build communication and collaboration skills through out the year while creating and talking to each other about their artwork.
Classifying Museum Art
Students work together at the beginning of art class to correctly classify landscape art into the proper media gallery. They were challenged to provide evidence for their classification claims. How do you know this landscape belongs in the painting gallery? Students can now classify art by subject matter (landscape, portrait, still life, and abstraction) and by media (painting, drawing, collage, photography and sculpture).

Mini Museum
First and Second Grade students are learning all about art museums this trimester. By the end of this trimester they will be able to classify works of art into their proper gallery based on their media (painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and drawing) and will be able to identify art that falls under these four popular subject matters: portrait, still life, abstraction, and landscape. We begin each class with an opportunity for students to work together to discuss and classify a given work of art. Students will be challenged to use observation to create a still life and landscape painting!
